Over 78% beds vacant in Bengaluru ICUs,Ventilators nearly full

With a steady decline of Covid-19 cases in Bengaluru, the hospital bed situation improves as the demand for hospitalization of infected patients has fallen. In the past few days, it wasn’t easy to get beds in Bengaluru. Citizens were struggling to find a single bed due to the highest caseload and also the controversial bed-blocking scam, which involved the close aide of BJP MLA Satish Reddy.

According to data on the BBMP website about government beds, the condition is far better among Covid-19 general beds than any other categories. Of the total 7,195 general beds, 5,624 (or 78.1%) were available by 3 pm on Sunday. Units with oxygenated beds, 2,098 (or 42.4%) of 4,945 beds were available. But when it comes to ICU beds and ICU beds with ventilators, the situation is not the same.
According to the website, just 20 (3.3%) of 589 ICU beds are available and only 10 (or 1.5%) of 637 ICU beds with ventilators are available.

TOI reports, while six ICU beds with ventilators were available in Rainbow Children’s Hospital, each one was vacant in the government hospital, Anekal; KC General Hospital, Oxford Medical College Hospital, and Research Centre; and Dr. BR Ambedkar Medical College Hospital.

The government beds are those in government and private hospitals, which are reserved for patients to be referred and their treatment is funded by public authorities.

Doctors in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute said that all 60 ventilator beds in Victoria Hospital were full, while 27 of the 35 ventilator beds in PMSSY hospital were taken and the remaining blocked.

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute’s dean-cum-director, Dr. CR Jayanthi, told TOI: “Some of the patients are on the ventilator for 15-20 days. Slow recovery in severe Covid cases is leading to a prolonged stay.”

BBMP chief commissioner Gaurav Gupta said that the availability of Covid-19 beds has lessened over the past 10-15 days. Our call centers, from 10,000 inquiries, get only 2,000 a day. We faced a tidal surge, but it has gradually declined. BBMP officers added that 28 Covid care centers set up by the government are mainly vacant and not all need to be continued.
