High Court ban order does not apply to degree colleges: CM Bommai clarifies

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday clarified that the High Court’s interim order restraining students from wearing religious clothing will not apply to degree colleges.

On Wednesday, Bommai was responded to a query by Congress leader Siddaramaiah in the Legislative Assembly. Siddaramaiah had sought clarification from chief minister on a statement made by Karnataka Higher Education Minister C N Ashwath Narayan in Chamarajnagar on Tuesday as the minister had stated that the Hijab ban does not apply to degree colleges.

Bommai clarifying the query said whatever Ashwath Narayan had said held true. “The High Court’s interim order in this regard is also clear. The restriction applied only to educational institutions where there is a dress code. It does not apply to places without dress code. The minister’s statement is correct.”

Things are very clear, he said adding that “our government will abide by the High Court order.”

Last week, the Karnataka High Court passed an interim order had requested the state government to reopen educational institutions while they were closed for almost a week as the protests over the hijab ban had turned violent. The court had restrained all the students from wearing saffron shawls, scarves, hijab and any religious flag inside the classroom.
