Udupi: The state government has withheld the Best Teacher Award for Ramakrishna B.G., Principal of Kundapur Government Undergraduate College, due to his involvement in the 2022 hijab controversy.
Ramakrishna B.G. was set to receive the award on Teacher’s Day, but the decision was reversed at the last moment. The controversy dates back to when the principal stopped a student wearing a hijab at the college gate, a moment that went viral and sparked widespread debate.
Despite the incident, the previous BJP government had selected him for the award, leading to public outrage. With mounting pressure to withdraw the recognition, the state government has halted the award.
