Karnataka: College Students in Koppa Wear Saffron Scarves to Protest Against Hijab in Classroom

A group of students in a degree college in Karnataka’s Koppa town wore saffron scarves protesting allegedly against allowing Muslim women to wear hijab inside the classroom.

Students of the government degree college in Balagadi village in Koppa claimed that if hijab was allowed inside the classroom, then saffron scarves could be sported too. Earlier, the same students had asked women not to attend classes wearing a hijab.

Notably, a similar situation had arisen three years ago when the college administration was involved to sort out the issue. Thus, a meeting has been called with parents and teachers to decide on the issue, this week.

Meanwhile, the government-run college had permitted all students to wear whatever they wish to when the hijab controversy broke out.

Principal of college Ananth Murthy was quoted as saying by PTI, “Everything was going smoothly but yesterday some students suddenly appeared in the class wearing scarves. They were objecting to the dress code of some students.”

In a similar incident, female Muslim students of state-run PU College in Karnataka’s Udupi district were allegedly denied entry into the classroom for wearing hijab.
