Karnataka: Hindu groom hosts iftar feast for Muslim friends

Amid the rise in communal disharmony and hate speeches against Muslims by hardline Hindutva outfits in the coastal region, a Hindu man has organized an iftar feast for his Muslim friends in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district.

Upset that his Muslim friends would not be able to feast at his wedding because they were fasting through the day for Ramzan, groom Chandrasekhar Jeddu, hailing from Bantwal taluk, organised an iftar or evening meal for them in the local mosque.

Chandrasekhar has sent a strong message to everyone at a time when religious disharmony has been in the news.

“In this village, Hindus, Christians and Muslims have lived cordially for many years. I was feeling miserable that my Muslim friends could not attend my wedding. So I spoke to a few of them and came up with a plan to organize an iftar for all at the local mosque in Byrikatte. The mosque heads were more than happy,” he told Times of India.

The iftar held on Monday evening in Byrikatte was attended by more than 100 of his Muslim friends, 30 Hindu friends, and four Christian pals, according to reports.

“This was just to convey that we are always together, now and in the future,” said Chandrasekhar, who works in a borewell company and got married on April 24.

Secretary of Jalaliya Juma Masjid, Mohiuddin Kunhi, told TOI that when Chandrashekar came to them requesting to host the iftar, they did not think twice.

“We agreed and it was a different iftar. It was the first time that iftar was inside the mosque. The mosque heads felicitated Chandrashekar for his gesture,” Kunhi said.
