Women rejoice as free bus travel scheme is rolled out in Karnataka

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, launched ‘Shakti’, a scheme which promises free travel for women in non-premiere services offered by State–run Road Transport Corporations (RTCs), at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on June 11, 2023.

The State government will issue the ‘Shakti Smart Card’ after receiving applications from women, including students, through the Seva Sindhu portal.

Until then, it has asked RTCs to accept any identity card issued by the Central or State government that carries the photograph and address of the beneficiary to issue a ‘zero ticket’ (free ticket). The government has directed the issuance of smart cards to be completed within three months.

It is estimated that close to 42 lakh women would avail themselves of the facility daily.

CM Siddaramaiah says this will help improve women’s participation in the workforce.

Women’s reaction is immensely joyful and say that this would help to improve women’s participation in the workforce and contribute to the development of the state and the country.
