The practice of imposing saree on teachers is not conducive to Kerala’s progressive attitude, said R Bindu, the state higher education minister on Friday.

Bindu said that one’s choice of dressing is an entirely personal matter and no one has the right to criticize or interfere in another person’s sartorial choices.

After many teachers complained that several state institutions continue to practice such policing, the higher education department issued a circular in this regard on Friday

“The government has already made its position clear in this regard on several occasions. Teachers have every right to dress according to their comfort in Kerala, regardless of the type of institute they work in. This practice of imposing the saree to our teachers is not conducive to Kerala. progressive attitude,” Minister Bindu said in a statement.

Bindu who was a teacher at Kerala Varma College in Thrissur, said she used to regularly wears churidars.

“Although a teacher has many responsibilities, adhering to such outdated and outdated ideas is not one of them. The choice of dress is an entirely personal matter. No one has the right to criticize or interfere in it. the clothing choices of another,” she said.

She pointed out that although the government has already issued a circular on May 9, 2014, clarifying this, it has become clear that several state institutions continue such practices. “Hence, the Department of Higher Education is issuing another circular to this effect.”

The minister recalled, saying that she spoke to a young lecturer, few days ago, who shared her experience at an educational institute in Kodungallur with Ms Bindu.

Even though the lecturer has the necessary qualifications, the staff apparently put forward a condition that she had to wear a saree every day if she wanted to work there.

“After news reports on this incident was shared, more such incidents have been brought to attention. Therefore, a new circular has been issued” she said.
