Uddhav Thackeray resigns, celebrations start in the BJP camp

Shortly after the Supreme Court ordered the Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to take the floor test to prove its majority in the Assembly on Thursday, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray left with only 15 MLAs, announced his decision to resign as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Wednesday.

Addressing the state virtually through Facebook Live, Uddhav Thackeray said “I had come (to power) in an unexpected manner and I am going out in a similar fashion. I am not going away forever, I will be here, and I will once again sit in the Sena Bhawan. I will gather all my people.” reported Hindustan Times.

He said while announcing his resignation as CM, “I am resigning as the Chief Minister. I don’t want a hand in the blood of Shiv Sainiks that may be spilled tomorrow,” Thackeray thanked Congress and NCP for supporting him, and in a direct hit at the rebels he further said, “Those whom we promoted and built up, they are the ones who have betrayed us”.

Following the announcement of his resignation, Thackeray visited Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The governor had directed Thackeray to be the interim CM.

Following the announcement, celebrations began at a hotel in Mumbai where BJP leaders were camping ahead of the trust vote that now stands cancelled. BJP with the support of Shiv Sena rebel MLAs will most likely come to power. Devendra Fadnavis who was ruled out of power 2.5 years ago, seems the most likely CM face.
