AAP ends BJP’s 15-year reign of MCD

After 15 years in power, the BJP was ousted from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections by the AAP. In the 250-member civic body, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has secured 131 seats, well past the halfway point, compared to the BJP’s 97. While six wards were won by Congress. Vote counting is still ongoing.

On December 4, the 250 wards in the national capital underwent elections. The elections, which were held for the first time since three civic bodies were merged earlier this year, garnered a total of 1,349 candidates. The BJP took 181 of the (then) 270 municipal wards in 2017, while AAP could only win 48 and Congress came in third with 30. But now in 2022, AAP comes out to display its stronghold on the national capital.
