Gurugram: Protesters Raise Slogans as Muslims Offer Namaz, Several Detained

Nearly 50 people have been detained in Gurugram’s Sector 37 on Friday, as they chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans to protest against namaz being offered at the spot by members of the Muslim community, the Quint reported.

Slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’ were being raised by the demonstrators amid heavy police presence at the site where Namaz was once held. Several members of right-wing Hindu groups could be seen arguing with the officials.

Talking to the police, one of the protesters at the site could be heard telling that they will not move even if they get arrested and that the cops should not try to “intimidate peaceful protesters.”

“We are not doing anything wrong,” he said, “This is a land in our village, how can you not allow us to come here?”

The protests in Sector 37 came amid several weeks of protests at the site against Friday namaz being offered in open spaces of Haryana’s Gurugram district.

Since September, Namaz is being disrupted in Gurugram. Similar protests have been continuing at several sites in Sector 47 and Sector 12. On 5 November, the Hindutva organizations even performed a pooja at the Sector 12 site.
