A Delhi court on Monday deferred its order on the bail plea of former student leader Umar Khalid in a case of larger conspiracy in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.
Saying the court was not ready, Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, who had scheduled to pronounce the order on Monday, has posted the matter for Wednesday.
On March 3, the Delhi court had reserved its order after hearing arguments by the prosecution and Khalid’s counsel, who said that the prosecution lacked the evidence to prove its case against him.
Former student of Jawaharlal Nehru Umar Khalid and many others were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for being the “masterminds” behind the Northeast Delhi Pogrom of February 2020, in which 53 people died and more than 700 injured.
Besides Khalid, other JNU students Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, activist Khalid Saifi, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain and many others have been booked under the stringent UAPA.
The riots had erupted in Delhi during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
While Kalita, Narwal and Zargar have all been released on bail, Hussain’s bail plea has been denied.
