Haridwar: Assault on RSS-BJP member on suspicion of being a Muslim

The incident took place in Manga Nagar of Haridwar district where a group of Haridwar kanwariyas, mistaking him for a Muslim man, dragged an RSS-BJP member out of a car and assaulted him.

The assaulted man, Pratap Singh (63), claimed to be an RSS-BJP member.

The reason behind the attack was that Pratap Singh’s car accidentally rammed into a kanwar carrying holy water for pilgrims. The Kanwariyas reportedly mistook the bearded Singh for a Muslim man as he wore a black cap and was accompanied by a burqa-clad woman.

This incident took place on June 10 and the video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The video also shows the Kanwariyas pulling Pratap Singh out of the car, then overturning the car and attacking it with sticks.

Speaking about this, Pratap Singh said, “The woman who was with me was a woman from the local BJP minority unit. I had gone with her to drop her son at the madrasa. While coming back for lunch when I parked the car on the side of the road there was nothing there but when I came back someone had placed a kavadi in front of the car. When I drove the car, it accidentally hit Kavadi. They attacked me, saying that I was a Muslim. Even though I claimed to be a Hindu and RSS BJP member, I was let go. “They sent the woman away without doing anything to Punya,” he said.

BJP’s state media in-charge Manveer Chauhan and the party’s Haridwar district president Sandeep Goyal said, “We are not aware of any incident of altercation between the Kanwariyas and any member of the BJP.”

After some news outlets and social media users claimed that Kanwariyas had attacked a “Muslim couple”, the Haridwar police said there was no communal bias in the incident.

Singh has registered a case in police station regarding this incident. Police have arrested two accused. An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 427 (mischief causing harm).

Another FIR has been registered under IPC Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, place of birth, domicile, language etc. and doing acts prejudicial to maintaining harmony) against those trying to spread fake information.

In the incident, he lost his phone in the car. Singh expressed frustration that he is a member of RSS and BJP, but no one from RSS or BJP approached him to inquire about the incident.
