Kashmiri students assaulted after India’s loss to Pakistan in T20 World Cup

There have been several reports from Punjab that Kashmiri students were thrashed following India’s defeat to Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday.

At an engineering college of Punjab’s Sangrur district, Kashmiri students have reported that a mob of students had attacked them.

Visuals surfacing social media indicated that the rooms of Kashmiri students were vandalised by the mob.

As reports of the attacks began circulating, several journalists and prominent citizens took to social media to warrant the attention of law enforcement agencies towards the incidents.

Nasir Khuehami has said on Twitter, “Kashmiri studnts assaulted in Bhai GIET Sangur Punjab after #Indpak Match. Students from Bihar barged in their rooms, thrashed them &went on rampage, vandalised the rooms of students, damagd the hall, abusd & beat up a few others.” Tagging Chief Minister Charanjit Channi, Journalists Aditya Menon and Ghazali Mohammad.

In another tweet, Journalist Mohammad Ghazali has also shared a video. “Students from Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology in Punjab’s Sangrur district sharing videos from inside their hostel post t20 match today,” he said tagging the Punjab police DGP Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota.

A Kashmiri student in the video is heard saying that while they were watching the match, UP students came and attacked them. He also questioned, “Aren’t we Indians?”

Several Kashmiris are fans of the Pakistan cricket team and visuals of them celebrating Pak’s victory with firecrackers in Srinagar has enraged many Hindu nationalists on social media.
