Navjot Singh Sidhu likely to be named Punjab Congress chief to end infighting: sources

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to be appointed Punjab Congress chief amid the infighting in the state, ahead of assembly polls in 2022. He is set to replace Sunil Jakhar.

Congress high command has been working to name Sidhu as the chief of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, despite Chief Minister Amarinder Singh neglecting earlier and saying that he was against Sidhu elevated to the post of state chief by ignoring several rightful leaders.

CM Captain Amarinder Singh will also revise his council of ministers, Assembly Speaker Rana KP Singh and MLA and Dalit leader Raj Kumar Verka are one of the three or four fresh faces expected to be included in the cabinet.

This move comes within a week after the CM met party chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi. On June 30, cricketer turned politician Sidhu had met Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in New Delhi.

Sidhu had joined the Congress after leaving the Bhartiya Janta party before the 2017 assembly polls. I’m 2019, he quit the Amarinder Singh cabinet over change in his portfolio.

In the past five months, Sidhu’s attacks on Captain Amarinder Singh have been public, he even called the chief minister a liar.

Last month, a three-member panel set up by party’s interim chief Sonia Gandhi to resolve ongoing crisis in the party had recommended that Captain Amarinder Singh is fit to be the party leader in the state but Sidhu should also be given a key role.
