Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Russian military forces have seized the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is the largest nuclear facility of Europe, Ukrainian authorities said on Friday, Reuters reported.
On Friday, a part of the nuclear plant was set ablaze during intense fighting with Ukrainian defenders and later the fire was extinguished.
U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said there was no elevated radiation levels near the plant, which provides more than a fifth of Ukraine’s total electricity generation,
Earlier on Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky in a video address had said, “Europeans, please wake up. Tell your politicians – Russian troops are shooting at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine.”
He said that Russian tanks had shot at the nuclear reactor plants, though there was no evidence cited that they had been hit.
Since February 24, thousands of people are believed to have been killed or wounded and more than 1 million refugees have fled Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the biggest attack since World War Two.
