‘Absolutely frivolous plea’ SC discards Waseem Rizvi’s plea seeking removal of 26 Quran verses

On Monday, the Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Waseem Rizvi, former Shia Waqf Board Chairman, for allegedly hurting Muslims’ religious sentiments with his petition in the Supreme Court seeking elimination of 26 verses of the Quran. The bench led by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman dismissed the plea stating, “this is an absolutely frivolous writ petition,” and imposed Rs. 50000 as costs on the petitioner for filing the petition, Live Law reported.

Rizvi, in his plea, alleged that the 26 verses from Quran “promote violence” and stated they were not part of the original holy book but were added in later revisions and should be removed from the sacred book.

Rizvi’s plea had triggered a storm, with many Muslim organizations slamming him for hurting Muslims’ sentiments across the world.

There have been protests against Rizvi across the country in March, and police complaints have been lodged against him.

The All India Shia Personal Law Board had said that Rizwi’s petition was an insult to Muslims of the entire world, and it has hurt them significantly.
