While hearing the case in connection with Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district, the Supreme Court on Thursday, asked the UP government “Who are the accused and have they been arrested?”
A bench led by Chief Justice NV Ramana and comprising Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli said, “We want to know who are the accused, whether arrested or not.” They further told UP’s Additional Advocate General Garima Parshad that the grievance is that “you are not properly investigating the matter”.
On October 3, violence erupted at farmer’s protests in Lakhimpur Kheriwhich led to the death of eight people. The matter on this case will be heard again on Friday.
Hours before the hearing, the UP government announced a single-member commission of enquiry to investigate the death of eight persons in protest.
