NIA team attacked while probing 2022 blast case in West Bengal

A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was allegedly attacked at East Midnapore in West Bengal early on Saturday morning. The attack took place when the officials went to East Midnapore for investigating a 2022 blast case at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader’s house.

Sources said that the federal agency went to Bhupatinagar around 5 am on Saturday and detained, who was related with the blast. They detained the man for questioning in connection with the blast. The team was attacked when they were just going to leave and return back. While the villagers demanded that the man should be released by the officials. Some of the village women also staged a protest by sitting over the NIA team’s vehicles and some also pelted stones. The windscreen of a vehicle was damaged. Later NIA lodged a complaint with the police.
“We have received a complaint. We are verifying things,” Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of East Midnapore told media.

On December 3, 2022, there was an explosion that had fully destroyed a house with a thatched roof in Bhupatinagar, killing three persons. The police had identified the victims as TMC’s Bhupatinagar booth president Rajkumar Manna (55), and party workers- Buddhadeb Manna and Biswajit Gayen. It is also noted that Rajkumar and Buddhadeb were cousins. The explosion took place at Rajkumar’s house. It was in June 2023 that the NIA had started a probe.
