KOLKATA: Nobel laureate, Abhijit Vinayak’s Banerjee mother, Nirmala Banerjee breathed her last on Friday at the RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), authorities of the medical establishment stated. The 87-year-old suffered a subdural hemorrhage at the time of her death. Banerjee was on ventilator support in the private hospital off the EM bypass after suffering a head injury at her residence, from where she was rushed to the hospital emergency during the early hours of Wednesday. The former professor was previously admitted to the same hospital on October 26 with respiratory distress. She was susequesntly discharged on October 29 as she was doing fine at the time of her discharge.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson added: “At present, Nirmala Banerjee is in extremely critical condition, and she is on ventilator support.” The Nobel Economic Prize Winner, 2019 was supposed to fly down to Kolkata to meet his ailing mother.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee reached the hospital on Thursday to pay a visit to the economist’s mother. After getting the news, she condoled her demise over a social media post on X which read: “Deeply saddened at the demise of Prof. Nirmala Banerjee, renowned economist, and mother of Nobel laureate Prof. Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee. She breathed her last today at Kolkata. I visited her at the hospital yesterday.Prof. Nirmala Banerjee was trained at the London School of Economics and was a former Professor of Economics at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata. She was married to eminent economist late Prof. Dipak Banerjee of the Presidency College. I came to know Nirmala di well and have many sweet memories now. Her demise is a great loss in our public life. My deep condolences to Abhijit, Aniruddha, other family members including Esther Duflo, as well as Nirmaladi’s friends and students.”
Nirmala Banerjee used to stay at her family’s Ballygunge home.
