Sandeshkhali Case TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh arrested

TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, an accused in the case of sexual assault and land grabbing in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, was arrested on Thursday morning by the police. Police said that Sheikh, who was hiding in North 24 Parganas district, was traced and arrested.

Sheikh was produced before the Basirhat court and sent to judicial custody, police said.

“He could not be arrested initially because of the legal entanglement. However, after the court clarified that there was no warrant for his arrest, he was arrested. “The opposition has used the ban on his arrest for political purposes,” TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.

“We have confidence in the capability of the state police. Earlier, we had said that the accused would be arrested within seven days. Now he has been arrested,” he said.

Former Food and Supplies Minister Jyotipriya Mallik has been arrested in the foodgrain scam case. In the same case, when the Enforcement Directorate went to raid Shahjahan Sheikh’s house, Sheikh was hiding. He was not found for 55 days. Now, the police have arrested and brought him.

Adivasi and tribal people of the Sandeshkhali area staged a fierce protest demanding his arrest. BJP has started using the issue of Shaikh’s arrest for its politics.

“The criminal is being protected by the TMC and the police. A good story is woven, and now Sheikh has been arrested. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar claimed that the continuous agitation led by the BJP had put pressure on the government to arrest Sheikh.

A police official said that Sheikh was traced with the help of the tower location of his mobile phone. “Sheikh used to change his place from time to time. He was identified with the help of the tower location of his mobile phone.

Sheikh has become a ferocious exploiter in the Sandeshkhali region in the last 20 years. He is being produced before the Basirhat court. Against this backdrop, heavy police presence has been made near the court to maintain law and order. Additional forces have also been deployed in the Sandeshkhali area, police said.

More than 100 complaints have been filed against Shaikh in the last few weeks. Police said that there were massive protests led by women demanding his arrest.

A case has been registered against Shaikh under IPC Sections 376D (gang rape) and 307 (attempt to murder). Sheikh’s close aides Shibaprasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar have also been arrested in the same case. Another accomplice, Ajit Maiti, has been arrested on charges of land grabbing.

Most of the complainants in the Sandeshkhali area have been forcibly occupied in their land by Shaikh and his associates. Also, it is alleged that the women of the area were sexually harassed.
