Violence reported at corners of West Bengal; Sandeshkhali still remains tense

There were incidents of violence, which were reported from some pockets of West Bengal during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Tension also spurred and remained palpable in Sandeshkhali, where fresh clashes took place over the weekend.

Reports did the round when it came under notice that there were clashes between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in various parts of the state. In East Midnapore district’s Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency, an alleged attack took place on a BJP worker, where he was attacked by TMC-backed goons at his house late on Tuesday night, and his right ear was chopped off. While the TMC leaders have refuted to these claims saying that it could be the result of BJP’s factional feuds. Although the police have registered a case but have not arrested anyone till now.

There were also reports of clashes from Bhangar in South 24 Parganas, that comes under Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat. A clash broke out between TMC and Indian Secular Front workers on Tuesday which led to some people getting injured. At Bolpur in Birbhum district, where the fourth phase of polling was held on May 13, a BJP polling agent’s house was set on fire in the early hours of Wednesday. A 42-year-old TMC worker, Mintu Sheikh, was killed one night before the fourth phase of polling took place.
