PM Modi speaks on Uniform Civil Code while addressing BJP workers

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has demanded implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the country. The Prime Minister said while addressing the BJP workers in Bhopal that the Constitution and the Supreme Court have demanded this.

This is the first time that the Prime Minister has taken a strong stand on the issue of Uniform Civil Code.

They are being stirred up in the name of Uniform Civil Code. If there are two rules in a house, will the house work? Then how can the country move forward with two laws? The Constitution talks about equal rights. The Supreme Court has also called for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. They (Opposition) are playing vote bank politics’ said Modi.

‘Muslims should identify those who disturb them for their own profit. We operate from within the Constitution. The Constitution mandates the introduction and implementation of a Uniform Civil Code. We will bring it. Those who seek votes in the name of social justice have done a great injustice to the villages and the poor.’ – Modi alleged.

The prime minister said that political appeasement is not the policy of BJP. ‘Our values are different. Our priority is bigger than the party. Country comes first. We believe that when there is good for the country, it will also be good for the party. BJP has decided not to go after political favours. Doing good for the country is not a favor but a satisfaction.’ – he added.

The 21st Law Commission recently issued an order seeking suggestions and comments from religious organizations and the public regarding the Uniform Civil Code. It has been asked to submit the proposals within thirty days.

Once the Civil Code is implemented, issues like marriage, divorce, succession, adoption will come under common law in the country. In these there will be no separate systems on the basis of religion. With just a year to go for the next Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has ramped up discussions on the Uniform Civil Code.
