Tanisha Crasto rallies for Paris Olympics again, this time it is with veteran Ponnappa

Tanisha Crasto along with her mixed doubles partner, Ishaan Bhatnagar, are top-ranked badminton players in the country. They recently entered the quarterfinals of the national tournament in Pune. The duo is ranked 18th globally and had been playing together in senior circuit since 2021. Although, the duo had pair up in 2019 in juniors events also.

They are currently India’s leading contender for a Paris Olympics slot in mixed doubles category.
It was at the Nationals, that the duo had to face their contending players- Hemanagendra Babu T-Kanika Kanwal to get a place in the semis. Although, Ishaan-Tanisha were leading 21-14, 12-13 when, but suddenly, Ishaan twisted his knee during the match. The injury led to an abrupted end to their campaign, and also to their pairing for the rest of the year. Ishaan had undergo surgery and he is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Tanisha Crasto, was thereby left with a challenge with her partner’s unexpected exit.

Tanisha had already had in her mind to the mixed doubles glory alongside Ishaan Bhatnagar. This is because the 20-year-old was yet to get settled with a doubles partner in women’s category. During the year of 2022, Tanisha had 3 different partners. While Tanisha was struggling to find a long-term women’s doubles partner since 2022, a veteran shuttler came to her rescue as she threw open the doors for a new doubles alliance: Ashwini Ponnappa ended her long-term partnership with N.Sikki Reddy in October of the same year. Tanisha and Ashwini had met at a common ground and thereby formed an unexpected alliance, defying the odds by bearing a 14-year age gap.

Although their partnership had been of only 11 years, yet they managed to clinch a silver medal at the Syed Modi International. Now the duo will be contending for the Paris Olympics which is all set to take place in 2024.
