At least 46 killed, several injured in building fire in Dhaka

At least 46 people were killed and several people are severely injured in a massive fire which took place through a six-storey building in Dhaka Bangladesh’s capital, late on Thursday.

The condition of many people are found to be in a critical condition due to the burn injuries and the respiratory issues, Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen said on Friday.
Health officials are also fearing that the death toll may rise within few hours.

The fire tragedy occurred at around 9:50 pm on Thursday at a restaurant, which was located on the first floor of the building. It quickly escalated to the upper floors which had more restaurants and also a garment shop.
Rescuers and fire personnel evacuated 75 people, including 42 people, who were found to be in an unconscious state, from the seven-storey building.

Thirteen fire service units were mobilised, the officials stated. “Thirty-three people died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and 10 at (the nearby) Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery,” Sen said.

Sen spoke to the reporters at the DMCH and said “The respiratory system of those who have survived so far has been seriously damaged.” Doctors said that some of the bodies that arrived were beyond recognition, fearing that the death toll may rise.
There were witnesses and officials, who said that in order to escape the fire, people rushed to the upper floors. Many people were rescued with the help of ladders, they added.

“When the fire started in the front and broke the glass, our cashier and servicemen made got everyone out. But both of them died later. I went to the kitchen, broke a window and jumped to save myself,” a survivor, Altaf, told news agency Reuters.

Locals also stated that the building was dangerous as it was filled with gas cylinders on every floor, even on the staircases. The cause behind the fire is yet to be ascertained and the authorities have already started a probe into the accident. (Inputs from Reuters and Dhaka Tribune)
