Bangladesh journalist Nadeem’s murder: Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) demands investigation

Geneva: The ‘Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) has condemned the killing of Bangladeshi journalist Ghulam Rabbani Nadeem (45). The organization has urged the Bangladesh government to conduct a fair investigation into the case and punish the culprits.

PEC is a global organization that strives for the safety and protection of rights in the media sector.

“The police have arrested four suspects in connection with the murder case”, said Nava Thakuria. PEC’s South Asia representative.

Some supporters of a leader of the ruling Awami League attacked Nadeem in Jamalpur on June 14. He was seriously injured and admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Local media reported that he died on June 15.

He used to work in Dhaka-based portal ‘banglanews24.com’ and channel Ektar TV’. He is the 26th journalist killed this year.

Journalists working in all media organizations of the world have freedom of reporting. If it is felt that the report published by them is not full of facts, it can be questioned and approached by the court. However, no one is allowed to attack journalists who have reported, PEC said.

It also demanded that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the head of the Awami League party, should pay attention to this barbaric killing and punish the culprits.

Last year three journalists were killed in Bangladesh and four in India.
