‘Don’t regret my decision’: US President Biden rules out any change to troop withdrawal decision

While the Taliban continues to tighten its grip over Afghanistan, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday ruled out any change in the withdrawal of his troops from the war-torn country.

President Biden told he does not regret his decision to pull out as the Taliban have now expanded their control to over 65 percent of the country as of Tuesday, nearing it to another civil war.

Noting that Washington has spent more than $1 trillion over the last 20 years and lost thousands of it’s troops, Biden said the US continues to provide significant air support, food, equipment and salaries to Afghan forces, as per Reuters.

Biden has ordered the withdrawal of US troops completely from Afghanistan by September 11. The Us military says it has already withdrawn nearly 90 percent of its troops from the war-ravaged country.

On Tuesday evening, Pul-e-Khumri, of the northern province of Baghlan became the seventh regional capital, to fall into the hands Taliban.

A provincial capital between the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul, Aibak, the Taliban insurgents were moving into government buildings. Hence, many government forces appeared to have withdrawn.

The Northern region for years was Afghanistan’s most peaceful region, with only a minimal presence of Taliban. But now the militants’ strategy appears to be focusing on to take the north, and border.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters the United States went to Afghanistan to deliver justice to those who attacked them on September 11, to disrupt terrorists seeking to use Afghanistan as a safe haven to attack the US. “We achieved those objectives some years ago. We judge the threat now against our homeland, which is his responsibility as commander-in-chief to focus on, as being one where the threat emanates from outside of Afghanistan,” she added.

As of Wednesday, the Taliban fighters have taken control of Faizabad, another city in northeastern province of Badakhshan, according to Reuters. It is the eighth provincial capital to fall to the militants in just six days as U.S. troops complete their withdrawal.
