Japan earthquake: 4 dead, over 100 injured after being hit by strong earthquake

Japan earthquake: After a strong earthquake jolted Japan’s northeast coast on Wednesday, shaking buildings and triggering a tsunami warning, four people were reported dead and over 100 injured.

The 7.3-magnitude tremor was as high as a 6-plus on the Japanese shaking intensity scale in some areas – too strong for people to stand, as per reports by public broadcaster NHK.

On Thursday morning, multiple smaller shakes continued to hit the region.

Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the government was working to assess the extent of any damage after the tremor.

In 2011, the same region was hit by a massive quake followed by a tsunami that triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

In the aftermath of the quake, nearly 2 million households were without power and Tokyo Electric Power Company was checking the condition of reactors at the Fukushima plant.

While the power was progressively restored throughout the night, about 30,000 homes were still without power on Thursday morning and another 4,300 without water.

Authorities in Fukushima, Miyagi and Yamagata have warned residents, prefectures to expect after shocks.
