Magnitude 6 earthquake hits Indonesia

Jakarta: An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale occurred near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at 9:43 pm local time. The epicentre of the tremor was at a depth of 9.9 km. No immediate tsunami warning was issued. However, Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned about a possible earthquake.

‘I was asleep when the earthquake struck. I immediately jumped out of bed. When it vibrated, it felt as if the rice was shaking a sieve. A powerful vibration indeed. We were near the epicentre. At present, I, my family, and neighbors have taken shelter in the plains”, said Khamaria, a 41-year-old housewife from Mali village in Central Sulawesi.
