The Hindutva threat is a significant challenge to the Idea of America: John Prabhudoss

Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) held a congressional meeting to discuss the Hindu American Foundation’s Lawsuit dismissal. A US District Judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) alleging defamation by five defendants for articles published in Aljazeera news. HAF filed the case in the District Court of Columbia against cofounders of Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR) Sunita Vishwanath and Raju Rajagopal, Executive Director of Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) Rasheed Ahmed, Chairman of Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA) John Prabhudoss, and Rutgers University Professor Audrey Truschke.

Addressing the Conference, Rasheed Ahmed, IAMC executive director, said: The lawsuit was highly stressful for me, my family, and my children, but in the end, we emerged victorious. But, unfortunately, HAF forgot they were in America, not India, where they could weaponize the legal system against the critics.

John Prabhudoss of Indian American Christians(AMC) said The US must recognize the threat of Hindutva in the US. It’s going to be a significant challenge for the idea of America.

The first thing I did after they filed the lawsuit was to thank God I was in America. Hindu right-wing has assassinated many critics in India, said Professor Audrey Truschkey.

Sunita Vishwanath, the cofounder of Hindus for Human Rights, also addressed the meeting and said Hindus for Human Rights was about a year old and had just hired our first full-time staff person when the lawsuit came. I couldn’t help thinking this wasn’t a coincidence that the moment we had a full-time professional staff person focused on advocacy in all the spaces where HAF was the only Hindu voice for decades, there was this audacious attempt to silence us. It did not silence us because we are principled and mission-driven human rights advocates. Whether it is our faith or our human rights principles, if you attack us, we will not waiver. We will speak our truth louder.
