Dhaka: In the wake of the coup in Bangladesh and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country, social media has been inundated with videos of looting and arson.
Among these, a video of a building on fire has been falsely circulated as a Hindu temple set ablaze by Muslim fundamentalists.
The Twitter account Visegrád 24 shared the video, inaccurately claiming it depicted a Hindu temple burning. This misinformation was further spread by News24 and Zee News Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, which described the viral video as showing a Hindu temple on fire.
However, fact-checking by Bangladeshi fact-checker Sohanur Rahman revealed that the building is the Raj Palace Coffee Shop & Restaurant in Satkhira, Bangladesh, not a Hindu temple. This was confirmed by information on the Facebook page Kalaroa Speech and images found on Google Maps.
Despite this, the false claim was shared by several social media users, including Sunanda Roy, Hindu Voice, and Random Sena, all known for propagating fake information.
