142 people were killed; Over 50,000 in camps’; Manipur government submits report to Supreme

New Delhi: The state government has told the Supreme Court that 142 people were killed in Manipur riots in the span of two months. Most of these are in Imphal West and Imphal East, the government said. On July 3, the Supreme Court had asked the government to submit a clear new report on the situation in the state. Based on this, these matters are clarified in the report submitted by the government on July 10.

Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi submitted the 16-page report to the court. The report has been prepared on the basis of police records from May 3rd to July 4th. 58 people were killed in Imphal West and Imphal East. 26 people were killed in Churachandpur. 21 and 18 people died in Kachching and Bishnupur districts of the valley respectively. Eight people died in the hilly district of Kangpokpi. 5995 FIRs have been registered in the state till July 4. The report also states that six major FIRs have been handed over to the CBI.

5053 cases have been reported related to fire. Most of these cases were reported in Kangpokpi (1091). Churachandpur also reported 1043 cases. It is reported that there are 54,488 people in 354 relief camps. The government also informed that Rs 101 crore has been donated for the running of the camps. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated that the Supreme Court is limited in controlling the situation in the state and this is the responsibility of the elected government.

Meanwhile, riots continue in Manipur. Yesterday, one more policeman was killed during violence in the state. The government has deployed more police and security forces to restore law and order in the state.
