Shakti Yojana’s Triumph: 6.19 Crore Women in U.K. District Celebrate Free Travel

Karwar: A Year of Transformation Under Shakti Yojana

One year after the launch of the Shakti Yojana, an initiative providing free travel for women in government buses, Uttara Kannada district has seen a significant positive impact. The scheme has benefitted 6.19 crore women, with free tickets worth Rs 178.12 crore distributed by the end of June 2024.

According to surveys, 6.19 crore women have utilized this scheme, demonstrating its success despite initial opposition. Many critics from opposing parties had dismissed Shakti Yojana as a failure, but it has proven to be especially beneficial for women in rural areas who previously spent thousands of rupees monthly on bus travel to cities for work. Now, laborers and daily wage workers are saving significant amounts of money, with the travel ratio increasing noticeably.

Women’s Voices: Joy and Empowerment
Numerous women shared their experiences and expressed their joy. Reporter interviews with local women reveal a transformative impact. “I used to spend thousands monthly just to commute for work,” says, a daily wage worker from a rural village. “Now, thanks to Shakti Yojana, I save that money for my family’s needs.”

Schoolgirls also benefit from the scheme, as it has made their commute to educational institutions easier and more affordable.

Economic Impact and Increased Ridership
The Shakti Yojana has not only eased financial burdens but also increased the revenue of the State Road Transport Corporation. As women travel for free, their families often accompany them, boosting overall ridership. Over 1.50 lakh women benefit from this scheme daily in the district.

From June 2023 to June 2024, the number of women passengers in Uttara Kannada increased from 30 lakh to 51 lakh, and daily travel revenue rose from Rs 8.33 crore to Rs 14.62 crore. The number of passengers on weekdays has surged from 50-60 to over 90 percent, even during non-peak hours, contributing to the corporation’s income without increasing diesel prices.

Infrastructure and Service Enhancements
To accommodate the increased demand, 67 new buses, including 2 palanquin buses, have been added to the district’s fleet. However, with some buses aging, there is a need for at least 100 more new buses to meet public demand and avoid overcrowding.

A senior Road Transport Corporation official stated, “All officers and staff have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of Shakti Yojana. We have submitted proposals for additional buses and staff recruitment to meet the district’s needs.”

Contrary to initial skepticism from opposition parties, Shakti Yojana has become a lifeline for many women. It not only facilitates free movement but also empowers women and girls to explore new opportunities. The scheme, along with the Ghara Lakshmi Yojana, has significantly contributed to the self-independence of women in the region.

The success of Shakti Yojana underscores the importance of accessible and inclusive public transportation, highlighting the state’s commitment to its citizens’ welfare and empowerment.
