After more than 3 years of incarceration, Lawyer-Activist Sudha Bharadwaj accused in Bhima Koregaon case was on Thursday, released from Byculla Prison in Mumbai.
A special Mumbai National Investigation Agency court on Monday refused Bharadwaj’s request to be granted lenient conditions for her release on bail, even as it passed an order for her release.
A week ago, the court had been directed by the Bombay High Court to set the conditions for Bharadwaj’s release on default bail.
The court ruled that Bharadwaj is to be released from jail on a bond of Rs 50,000, with two sureties.
On December 1, Bharadwaj was granted default bail by a two-judge bench of the Bombay High Court. The court had told her to approach the special NIA court by December 8 to finalise modalities about her release and bail conditions.
Eight other accused in the Bhima Koregaon case had also sought bail. However, only Bharadwaj got default bail as her petition met the criteria required for bail. She had filed the application before the filing of the chargesheet and when her 90-day detention period was over.
