13-Year-Old Boy in Police Custody for Bomb Threat at Delhi Airport

A 13-year-old boy has been detained for allegedly sending a threatening letter to the Delhi airport saying that a bomb had been placed on an Air Canada flight bound for Toronto.

A boy from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut told police that he had sent the threatening mail “just for fun” last Tuesday. The boy claimed that he sent the fake threat mail for fun after seeing similar threat calls received in various schools recently.

The bomb threat email was reportedly sent to see if the authorities would be able to trace him after he sent a fake threat email.

The boy had created a fake email ID to send bomb-threat emails. “He sent the mail from his phone using his mother’s Wi-Fi,” officials said.

It is reported that the boy immediately deleted the email ID after Bombay sent the threatening email.

“The boy told us that he was excited when he saw news of a fake bomb threat in the media at Delhi airport the next day. But he was also afraid and that’s why the boy did not give any information to his parents out of fear,” said Deputy Commissioner Usha Ranganani.

The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) office received an email at 10.50 pm Tuesday (June 12) due to which the flight was delayed for about 12 hours. After a thorough check, nothing was found on the plane and it was declared a false threat.

During the investigation, the email was found in Meerut. Later, a team of Delhi Police went there and interrogated the boy. The police have seized his mobile phone and the boy is being counseled, officials said.
