Israel-Hamas conflict: PM Modi condemns killing of civilians

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his concern over the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants over the death of thousands of innocent people.

Addressing the Voice of the Global South summit on “new challenges” in the West Asia region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India had exercised “restraint” during the conflict.

“We have emphasized dialogue and diplomacy. We strongly condemn the death of civilians in the conflict between Israel and Hamas,” Modi said.

PM Modi said India has sent humanitarian aid to Palestine after talks with Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas.

“It is time for the countries of the Global South to unite for the greater global good,” Modi called.

“Modi’s statement comes after India voted in favor of a United Nations resolution condemning settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian territory.

India was among the 145 countries that voted in favor of the resolution. 7 countries including America, Canada and Israel voted against and 18 abstained.

In October, India abstained when the United Nations General Assembly voted on Jordan’s draft resolution. India had called for an immediate humanitarian agreement on this occasion.

The resolution titled ‘Protection of Civilians and Upholding Legal and Humanitarian Obligations’ was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. 120 countries voted in favor of it. Against it 14 and 45 were absent.

India has maintained its stand for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine and reiterated its commitment to protect civilians caught up in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
