Calls for Transparency: Supreme Court Seeks Reports on Manipur Violence Investigation

The Supreme Court has asked the government and the investigation teams to submit an inquiry report into the Manipur violence case. The government has asked the NIA and the CBI as to how far the investigation has progressed and whether a charge sheet has been filed in any case.

The NIA sought clarification on two main issues before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. It directed the NIA to “clarify whether the trial should be conducted in Assam after the charge sheet is filed and the procedure to be followed in the case of an accused found to be a juvenile on the date of offense.”

“Let’s think about how many cases we are dealing with. “We request him to give some assistance as to whether the trial should be held in Assam,” the bench told the Manipur Advocate General.

The Supreme Court clarified that in the wake of many cases of violence including the attack on the Collector’s residence during the last two months, no direction can be given to the state government or the law enforcement agencies regarding the maintenance of law and order situation in the state.

We cannot direct civil society organizations in this regard. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra opined that the state government exists to maintain law and order.

The Supreme Court had formed a three-member committee headed by Justice Mittal to pass an order related to the Manipur violence incidents.
