Internet to resume in Manipur: CM Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N.Biren Singh has said that mobile internet services, which were suspended after the outbreak of communal violence in Manipur on May 3, will be resumed from Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, he said, “Mobile internet services were suspended on May 3 to prevent the spread of fake news, propaganda and hate speech. Now the situation has improved. Hence, mobile internet services will be restored from today (Saturday) itself,” he said.

“Government will continue efforts to prevent infiltration of illegal migrants along India-Myanmar border. The boundary needs to be fully fenced. “The Union Home Ministry has taken steps to fence 60 km of Manipur’s international border,” he said.

“We have to focus on real issues in the state. “Our priority is to take measures for the welfare of the internally displaced people and fight against the influx of illegal immigrants,” he said.

The tribal Kuki community had started protesting after the Manipur High Court said that the majority and powerful Maithei community would be given Scheduled Caste status. However, the violence started due to the attack during the protest.

The incident of the naked procession of two Kuki women and their gang rape shocked the nation. There were struggles across the country to bring peace to Manipur.
