Manipur communal violence; More than 50 thousand people have left their homes

Imphal: 50,698 people have left their homes due to communal violence in the state of Manipur and have been sheltered in 349 resettlement centres, the Manipur government said. Minister Dr. RK Ranjan, who has shared information about this said that a total of 53 weapons and 39 bombs have been seized in the state. It has been ordered not to increase the prices of essential items in the state. Out of total 242 bank branches in the state, 198 branches are already functioning again, he said.

A price control system has been implemented in the state to prevent the rise in prices of essential commodities. Through this, essential items are being brought to the state through National Highway-37. 5,000 metric tonnes of construction materials, fuel and essentials were brought to Manipur in 2,376 trucks.

Citing an official report, the Minister said that district and cluster nodal officers have been entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring the relief camps opened for women, children and the elderly. 198 out of 242 bank branches in the state have reopened. He informed that other banks will also be operational soon.

Around 100 people have been killed and over 300 injured in the violence so far. About 10,000 soldiers of the Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to restore peace in the state.

Meanwhile, a BJP MLA from Imphal East has placed a box to return weapons in front of his house. So far 130 weapons including rifles have been kept in this box. Another minister has also done the same and put up a poster in front of his house. “Leave the weapons you have stolen here” written in English and Maithei on a poster.

In view of the violent incidents on Saturday, the government has extended the internet ban for another 5 days. In the order issued by the home department, it has been said that the internet ban will be in force till 3 pm on June 15.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have appealed for the arms to be returned. A huge amount of weapons were looted from police stations during the violence in Manipur. A total of 990 weapons and 13,526 rounds of ammunition have been returned to the government since then.
