Resurgence of violence in Manipur, Union Minister’s house set on fire

Imphal: In riot-hit Kongba of Manipur, miscreants set fire to Ranjan Singh’s house on Thursday night.

Around 11 pm, a group of more than a thousand people attacked Singh’s residence and set it on fire.

The residence of Ranjan Singh, who is the Minister of State for External Affairs, was heavily damaged. Official sources said that Singh and his family were not in Manipur at the time of the incident.

Responding to the media about the incident, Ranjan Singh said, ‘I am in Kerala for government work. Luckily no one was hurt in my house last night. The miscreants had come with petrol bombs. The ground floor and first floor of my house are damaged. This is painful. I still appeal to the people to maintain peace. Being involved in this kind of activity is completely inhumane.

Violence has been going on for a month now between Maithei and Kuki communities over the Scheduled Tribe reservation issue in Manipur. So far more than 100 people have died and more than 300 people have been injured.

Army and paramilitary forces have been deployed to maintain peace in the state. However, suspected militants attacked Khamelak village in East Imphal on Tuesday (June 13) night. 9 people died and more than 25 people were injured in the incident.

Following this, the official residence of Kuki community leader Nemcha Kipgen was set ablaze on Wednesday (June 14) night. Many houses were set on fire on Thursday as well.
