Violence continues in Manipur : Unprovoked Firing; 1 soldier injured

On the intervening night of June 18 and 19, armed miscreants from Kanto Sabal resorted to unprovoked firing towards Chingmang village in violence-hit Manipur. In an official statement, Indian Army’s Spear Corps said that Indian Army personnel were injured.

The injured personnel were shifted to a military hospital in Limakhong where their condition is said to be stable. Keeping in view the presence of villagers in the area, army teams brought the situation under control through retaliatory firing. Officials have informed that an operation is being conducted at the scene.

45 days have passed since the start of violence between Maiti and Kuki tribal communities in Manipur, the situation is still not under control. The incident took place after the authorities decided to relax curfew in the state.

Security forces are still maintaining a tight vigil on law and order in the state and the Indian Army held a flag parade in the Imphal Valley on Sunday.

So far 115 people have lost their lives and 60 thousand people have lost their homes due to this violence. Ministers’ houses were vandalized and set on fire. More than 40,000 security personnel, including the Indian Army, have been deployed to restore peace and are struggling to control the conflict.

On the other hand, the BJP government at the Centre and Manipur are saying that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain the status quo.

Neighboring North Eastern states are helping the refugees to get asylum. They are appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release money for their welfare and security. The politics surrounding the violence in Manipur is intensifying and opposition leaders are blaming the government for deteriorating law and order in the state.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has visited the state several times and has also formed committees to investigate the incidents of violence. The ministry confirmed that around 40,000 central security forces would continue to support the Manipur Police to quell the violence.
