‘One country, one election’ system is anti-democratic: CM Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: CM Siddaramaiah said that one country one election system is anti-democratic.

Our party will face the proposal of ‘one country one election’ which contains the hidden agenda of the ruling party inside and outside the Parliament.

The referendum of the country is also against the system of “one country one election”. One country one election system is completely anti-democratic. There is no solution in the proposal to the crisis faced when the ruling party fails to gain a confidence vote in the Lok Sabha or the Legislative Assembly.

By-elections are the only viable solution in such a situation. Instead, CM Siddaramaiah said that if the minority party, which failed to get a vote of confidence in the House, is allowed to continue in power, it will be a betrayal of the democratic system.

Our current Election Commission does not have the power to hold Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the entire country. For this, our electoral system will have to be expanded by twofold. All this is not done in haste. For the new electoral system to be implemented, the Representation of the People Act needs to be amended first.

Besides this, at least five articles of the constitution need to be amended. In the present system, it will be difficult for the NDA to get enough number of members for a constitutional amendment. CM Siddaramaiah said that although his government knew all this, the Cabinet accepted this proposal only to create confusion among the people and cover up their failure.
