Netherlands derailed Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign as they registered a comfortable win by 87 runs as the two sides met on Saturday in Eden Gardens, Kolkata for the 28th match of ICC Men’s World Cup.
After winning the toss, Netherlands batted first and scored a respectable 229 all out in their 50 overs on a challenging surface. Captain Scott Edwards scored 68 of 89 balls and he was assisted by experienced Sybrand Engelbrecht (35 of 61 balls) and all rounder Logan van Beek (23 of 16 balls). For Bangladesh, Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi Hasan have picked up two wickets each.
In reply, Bangladesh had been bundled out for 142 in 42.2 overs as their batters could not able to put up any resistance against disciplined Netherlands bowling. Paul van Meekeren was was the pick of the bowlers for Dutch as he picked up 4 wickets.
Paul van Meekeren was given the Player of the Match for his performance with the ball. In post- match presentations, he has said, “Pretty special day. We’ve said earlier we want to go till the semis, and for that we need to win games. Very happy with the way we bounced back against Australia. At the halfway stage, 230-240 would have been par we reckoned. Aryan Dutt and van Beek kept things tight in the powerplay. We’ve been working on our fielding, every training session we do 20 minutes of fielding drills. It was an all round performance, pretty tough to pick a Man of the Match. Scott Edwards and Sybrand Engelbrecht got a bit of momentum for us by building that partnership. Pure team performance tonight.”
This win has helped Netherlands to move from the bottom of the points table to the 8th position in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.
