Prime Minister’s statement on Uniform Civil Code: All India Muslim Personal Law Board holds emergency meeting

NEW DELHI: Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted the need for Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, India’s apex Muslim body, held an emergency meeting last night.

Addressing BJP workers in Bhopal yesterday, Prime Minister Modi said that two laws cannot work in the same country. He asserted that the Constitution mentions equal rights for all citizens and Supreme Court judgments have also called for uniform laws.

The meeting of the Muslim Law Board was held virtually for about three hours. The legal aspects of the UCC were discussed in the meeting in the context of Prime Minister Modi’s statements of prioritizing the agenda, which has always been part of BJP manifestos.

The Muslim body has decided to submit a draft proposal to the Law Commission after taking into account the points given by lawyers and experts.

The Law Commission has initiated a fresh consultation process on the Uniform Civil Code and sought views from stakeholders amid reports that the government is planning to bring out a draft bill soon.
