Uniform Civil Code: No Harm to North Eastern States and Tribal Community- Union Minister of State for Health SP Singh Baghel

New Delhi: Amid speculations that the Uniform Civil Code Bill will be tabled in the Monsoon session of Parliament, Union Minister of State for Health SP Singh Baghel has expressed the opinion that the UCC will not pose any threat to the North-Eastern states of the country and the tribal community.

Speaking to reporters, Minister Baghel said that the rights and traditions of the tribal community of the North Eastern state will not be affected by the proposed Uniform Civil Code, adding that the BJP respects the diversity and culture of the tribal communities and will not impose any law against their interests.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has elected a tribal woman as President for the highest post in the country. Not only that, the tribal community has a large number of MLAs, MPs, Rajya Sabha members and ministers. In that regard, our party (BJP) will respect the tradition of the North Eastern state. But he said that the politics of appeasement is not right in this matter.

Baghel explained that according to Schedule 6 of the Constitution, which provides special provisions for certain tribal areas in the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram, no bill will apply to them unless their state legislators approve the Centre’s decision.

Despite this, he said that the tribals of other states will be consulted and opinion will be collected before implementing any law.

According to the report, Baghel was reacting to Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi’s statement that the tribal community of North East and other regions should be excluded from the purview of UCC.
