Dalit Vote Bank Showdown: BJP’s Masterstroke in SC-ST Reservation Sub-Categorization?

The BJP government’s decision in Haryana to implement sub-categorization in SC-ST reservation has set the tone for UP as well. Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya’s statement has intensified political activity. The Haryana government’s decision has created a stir in UP’s political circles, with Maurya welcoming the move and hinting at its imminent implementation in UP.

If the state government takes steps in this direction, a fierce competition among political parties for Dalit votes is inevitable. The BSP has consistently opposed the Supreme Court’s decision on sub-categorization of SC-ST reservation. In the Haryana elections, the party made it an issue to woo Dalits but failed to succeed.

The BJP government’s decision in Haryana has increased the heart rate of UP’s political parties. If the UP government makes a significant decision on this, it will increase the difficulties of other parties, including the BSP. The SP, Congress, and India Alliance are also trying to win over the Dalit vote bank.

The SP and India Alliance’s PDA formula is incomplete without the Dalit vote bank. The BJP’s victory in Haryana has shown that it has made the Supreme Court’s decision a winning weapon to gain traction among Dalits. It’s clear that several Dalit sub-castes supported the BJP on this issue.

Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya welcomed Haryana’s decision, saying, “It’s essential that reservation benefits reach the deprived sections of our society that remain backward even 75 years later. It’s the responsibility of all parties to uplift them. Opposing this is unacceptable.”

The BJP governments, including Haryana, are committed to the development of all sections of society under PM Modi’s leadership, following the path of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” (Collective Support, Collective Development).
