New Delhi: Seeking medical report of the Siddique Kappan, a Kerala based journalist who is undergoing treatment for Covid in a hospital in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, the Apex Court has directed the official to submit the details.

The supreme court which was hearing a petition with regard to granting bail to Kappan and shifting him to AIMMS Delhi for better treatment, asked the UP government to submit the medical details of the jailed reporter.

Stating that the SC wishes to see the reports first which Chief of India, N. V. Raman directed the UP government to present it by Wednesday, he directed this to Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

It may be noted that journalist, Kappan was arrested by  UP police in September last year while he was heading towards Hathras to cover the story related to alleged gang rape of a Dalit girl.

The police claims that Kappan was planning to create unrest in the country as he is associated with Popular Front of India, an organization, which right wing activist calls anti national. The UP police also filed tough UAPA act against him.

During his stay in jail, he was tested Covid positive, after which he was admitted in hospital for treatment.

Alleging that her husband has been ill-treated by UP police in jail, Kappan’s wife Raihanath has written letter to SC accusing UP police of treating Kappan like an animal in the jail.

Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) too has asked the journalist to be shifted to AIIMS.
