Siddique Kappan to remain in jail for another case

According to prison officials, Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, who was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court, would remain in jail here while the Enforcement Directorate investigates a case against him.

On Monday, a Lucknow court ordered the release of Mr. Kappan, who had been detained since his arrest in October 2020 while on his route to Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, to cover a Dalit woman’s alleged rape and death.

“Kappan will continue to remain in jail as a case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate is still pending,” DG Jail PRO Santosh Verma told PTI.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Anurodh Mishra had instructed Kappan to provide two sureties of 1 lakh each and a personal bond of the same amount before granting his freedom. The judge also demanded a promise from the journalist that he would uphold the restrictions placed on him by the highest court.

The police in Mathura detained Mr. Kappan along with three other people, Athikur Rehman, Alam, and Masood, for allegedly having ties to the Popular Front of India and participating in a plot to incite violence.
