‘It’s not a political decision but to avoid disrespect for Quranic verses’: Aligarh Muslim University on removal of Quranic verses from university monogram

The Aligarh Muslim University management on Wednesday clarified that the removal of Quranic verses from the AMU monogram was not a political decision but to avoid disrespect for Quranic verses.

The administration also clarified that monograms with Quranic verses will not be removed from AMU degrees, diplomas and other documents. The removal of a Quranic verse from the monogram has caused outrage among the AMU fraternity as well as the Muslim community, with people saying that the current AMU is appeasing political forces.

Putting an end to the controversy, the AMU in a statement said that this was an old decision taken by the Executive Council (EC) vide its resolution, dated October 4, 2005 and resolution no. 15, dated January 1, 2005, the meetings resolved Provided that, notices on invitation letters, pamphlets, examination and test answer sheets, calendars, file covers, project and laboratory reports, examination and admission forms and letterhead shall not contain monograms with Quranic verses. “Because the need for these documents is short-lived.Therefore, it should not be used to avoid disrespect for the verses of the Quran.”

However, in such cases a monogram with five stars in the circle may be used instead of verses.

AMU Registrar, Mr. Abdul Hameed (IPS) said, “Monogram with Quranic verses for AMU degrees, diplomas, certificates, final year marksheets, Dean Students Welfare, Sherwani (traditional knee-length coat), badges, AMU flag The engraved on the character certificate of the students will be issued. Apart from this, Monograms containing Quranic verses will also be used in buildings, glosses and signboards, books, monographs, diaries, PG essays and PhD thesis.”
