Karnataka’s lockdown implementation to get stricter: Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai

Home minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday said his administration would make sure there is stricter enforcement of the lockdown in the coming days to curb the unnecessary movement of people, and the chief minister will notify a conclusion on extension of the restrictions on May 23.

Bommai said measures are taken by the home department, such as seizing vehicles of those wandering out unnecessarily, and soon rules will be made more strict.

The present lockdown is in force till May 24. Lockdown measures are being strictly enforced in the districts due to the surge of Covid-19 cases in rural areas, but people continue to violate rules, Bommai specified.

He spoke about five people going on a motorcycle to attend a marriage in Yadgir district before police stopped them.

He stated the condition is severe due to the second wave and the virus is spreading increasingly, it is essential to take strict action. People should understand the seriousness of the lockdown and cooperate.

He said many leaders, ministers, and experts have also suggested extending the lockdown for a few more weeks. The Chief Minister has also announced financial packages to aid the needy, and in upcoming days, further decisions will be taken.

His statements signified that the government could extend the lockdown till this month-end. Many ministers, including R Ashok, have supported an extension. JD(S) legislature party chief HD Kumaraswamy has urged the government to extend the lockdown for one more month.
