India now identified with minority persecution, Islamophobia: Shashi Tharoor on Delhi demolition drive

Slamming the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s led-BJP government for bulldozing properties of suspected rioters, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that the job of the government is to “build up a nation and not bulldoze it down”.

“The government that is elected to build has chosen instead to destroy. The job of a government is to build up the nation, not bulldoze it down. This government has forfeited the trust of a large number of its citizens by this shameful conduct,” Shashi Tharoor.

Earlier on Wednesday, the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) conducted an anti-encroachment drive in the violence-hit Jahangirpuri area demolishing several structures.

The supreme court had ordered a status quo on Wednesday. However, the demolition drive continued even an hour after the court’s order.

“India’s image is going downhill around the world. Everything I hear from my friends abroad is deeply negative. We are being identified with minority persecution and Islamophobia. We at one point used to be respected for our democracy and diversity…” The Congress leader said adding that the BJP is responsible.

Meanwhile, the Apex court on Thursday has issued notice on the pleas against the demolition drive. The bench has also confirmed that the status quo order passed by the court on Wednesday would remain in effect while it hears the petitions, which will be next taken up after two weeks.
